Wickham Recreation Precinct – electrical infrastructure & sports lighting upgrades

Overview

Karratha Electrical Group (KEG) has delivered an extensive range of electrical infrastructure, sports lighting, aquatic centre lighting and lighting control upgrades across the Wickham Recreation Precinct.

The multi-stage works have supported the ongoing development and modernisation of the precinct, incorporating AFL and cricket oval lighting, rugby oval lighting, aquatic centre floodlighting, basketball and tennis court lighting, carpark and surrounding area lighting, and communications infrastructure.

KEG’s involvement has included project management, design and engineering coordination, structural and geotechnical investigations, construction management, electrical distribution upgrades, specialist lighting installations, automated control systems, testing and commissioning.

The works required careful planning and coordination across multiple operational sporting facilities, with a focus on improving lighting performance, energy efficiency, system reliability and long-term asset management.

Scope of works

  • Project management, design coordination, construction supervision, specialist contractor engagement and direct client reporting across multiple stages of precinct development.
  • Coordination of structural engineering, geotechnical investigations, building approvals, foundation construction and specialist lifting operations.
  • Design coordination and installation of four new 33.5-metre sports lighting towers for the AFL and cricket oval, including reinforced concrete foundations, structural assemblies and crossarms.
  • Installation of 48 high-output Musco LED floodlights for the AFL and cricket playing surfaces.
  • Installation of dedicated Musco LED floodlighting for the cricket practice nets.
  • Upgrade of the rugby oval lighting, retaining six existing lighting towers and installing new crossarms, control equipment and 14 Musco LED floodlights.
  • Electrical distribution works including new and upgraded switchboards, underground cabling, conduits, circuit protection, earthing and lighting control infrastructure.
  • Lighting upgrades and control integration across the tennis, netball, basketball, indoor cricket and associated recreation facilities.
  • Design coordination and electrical works associated with carpark, pedestrian access and surrounding precinct lighting.
  • Installation and integration of Musco Control-Link systems, providing centralised remote operation, scheduling, monitoring and individual sporting area control.
  • Electrical infrastructure works associated with the Wickham Aquatic Centre, including sports floodlighting and high-mast lighting installations.
  • Supply and delivery of a 24-metre combination communications and lighting pole, incorporating structural mounting arrangements for floodlights and wireless communications equipment.
  • Aquatic centre LED floodlighting works, including luminaire replacements, elevated work platform access, cabling, lighting alignment and night-time lux testing.
  • Coordination of lighting installations around operational facilities, including temporary exclusion zones and access management.
  • Electrical testing, lighting level verification, commissioning, compliance documentation and project handover.

Outcomes

The completed works have substantially modernised the electrical and lighting infrastructure across the Wickham Recreation Precinct, providing high-performance LED lighting for multiple sporting and community facilities.

The AFL and cricket oval lighting installation incorporates four new 33.5-metre towers and 48 Musco LED floodlights, achieving up to 529 lux maintained average illumination for cricket (Outdoor Cricket Class IV), delivering a high-performance lighting outcome in excess of AS 2560 sports lighting requirements.

The rugby oval lighting upgrade achieved a measured average illumination of 238 lux against a 200 lux requirement, with uniformity testing confirming a high-performance lighting outcome in excess of the nominated AS 2560 performance criteria.
