Karratha Leisureplex – electrical infrastructure, sports lighting & automation upgrades

Overview

Karratha Electrical Group (KEG) has delivered a range of major electrical infrastructure, sports lighting and automation upgrades across the Karratha Leisureplex, one of the Pilbara’s principal sporting and recreational facilities.

Projects included new Musco LED sports lighting installations for the AFL/cricket oval, rugby field, cricket practice nets, aquatic centre and basketball facilities, together with electrical distribution upgrades, automated lighting controls and motorised aquatic shade structure installations.

KEG’s involvement included electrical design and engineering coordination, project management, specialist contractor coordination, underground electrical infrastructure, switchboard upgrades, high-mast lighting installations, control system integration, testing and commissioning.

Works were coordinated around an operational sporting and recreational precinct, maintaining facility access and minimising disruption to sporting activities and public use.

Scope of works

  • Complete electrical project management, construction supervision, specialist contractor coordination and direct client reporting.
  • Design coordination and installation of Musco LED sports lighting systems across the AFL/cricket oval, rugby field and cricket practice nets.
  • Removal of eight existing sports lighting towers and installation of six new lighting towers, including four approximately 33.5-metre towers and two 24.3-metre towers.
  • Installation of 35 Musco LED sports floodlights with a combined designed electrical load of 44.82 kW.
  • Coordination of structural engineering, reinforced concrete foundations, pole installation and specialist lifting operations.
  • Electrical design, cable calculations and installation of underground submains and final subcircuits supplying the new sports lighting infrastructure.
  • Upgrade of three existing oval electrical distribution boards, including new circuit protection and lighting control supplies.
  • Installation of foundation earthing and lightning protection systems, including bonding of reinforced concrete foundations to lighting towers.
  • Integration of Musco Control-Link automation for remote lighting operation, scheduling, monitoring and individual sporting-area control.
  • Aquatic centre lighting upgrade involving replacement of existing lighting equipment and installation of 13 Musco 580 W LED floodlights across eight existing poles.
  • Replacement of aquatic centre lighting crossarms and installation of IP56 powder-coated aluminium LED driver enclosures.
  • Aquatic lighting design coordination to optimise illumination while controlling reflected glare from swimming pool surfaces.
  • Electrical installation associated with motorised aquatic centre shade structures, including three motor control distribution boards, new power supplies and control cabling.
  • Installation of 150 mm galvanised cable ladder, custom support brackets, underground conduits and mechanical cable protection across the north, south and east aquatic shade structures.
  • Coordination with specialist shade structure contractors for motor control integration, electrical installation and commissioning.
  • Electrical works associated with indoor and outdoor basketball facilities, including sports lighting and associated control infrastructure.
  • Electrical testing, commissioning, illumination verification, certification and preparation of handover documentation.

Outcomes

KEG delivered significant electrical and sports lighting infrastructure upgrades across the Karratha Leisureplex, modernising multiple sporting facilities with energy-efficient LED technology, upgraded electrical distribution and integrated automation.

The AFL/cricket and rugby lighting project incorporated six new lighting towers and 35 Musco LED luminaires, providing dedicated lighting systems for multiple sporting disciplines with a combined designed operating load of 44.82 kW.

The aquatic centre lighting upgrade introduced a modern LED system across the existing eight-pole arrangement, improving lighting performance while addressing the specific glare requirements associated with aquatic facilities.

Integration of Musco Control-Link technology provides centralised lighting management, remote operation, scheduling and system monitoring, allowing the City of Karratha to manage sporting facilities more efficiently.

The projects demonstrate KEG’s capability to manage and deliver complex electrical infrastructure works across operational public facilities, combining electrical engineering, high-mast sports lighting, underground distribution, automation and multidisciplinary construction coordination.
